ST FORMAT
=========
versus
ST USER (incorporating GAMER,ST WORLD)
======================================
ST Format - Future Publishing - £2.95 - One Disk
ST User - EuroPress - £3.75 - Two Disks
Now these are the two main magazines for the ST, the others
lacking serious content, ST Format, and ST User.
These two magazines have now been re-designed and put onto bigger
paper, and expanded somewhat.
First of all lets look at ST USER.
ST User, didn't originally have a cover disk, but eventually
there was a one plopped on (by this I mean it wasn't too good -
if you see what I mean!). The magazine in content was quite
good, but the disk was appalling, whereas ST Format, was good
reading, and had quite a good coverdisk.
ST User's coverdisk eventually got up to some standard, and they
have included:
TCB Tracker 1.1 (Full version), Modules, Mortimer 1.0 (Full),
Devpac 1.25, and loads of game demos.
I was quite surprised to find TCB Tracker 1.1 on the disk, and it
was the full version, with manual on disk. I advise you to get a
back issue of this, even though its only about £15.00 now with
full manual and modules etc.
ST User now incorporates ST World and GAMER, St World was the
best serious review magazine in the ST Scene, it had supertests,
hardware and software price lists and loads of hot reviews.
It is now included in ST User (not seperate) but in the same sort
of way. ST GAMER, is a new novel idea, which is a colour pull-
out section containing all game reviews, previews, hints, adverts
and everything, something I like very much!
The quality of reviews have gone up in ST User since the change
over, and I must admit I find it very good now. Since the days
when it had big letters and titles, to fill in the pages I
expect!
Articles in October 1991, the first new look issue, were from
MIDI programming in C to STE Sound replay (incidentally a new
programming series has started - telling you how to use your STE
to the limits! - in assembler). On the Disk were programs like
Armaltye, an amazing one level demo, that is quite addictive,
great grafix and I can't wait to see the full game. A Tracker
Module was included, Maze - a fast furious game, Ramfiles- copies
some programs to RAMDISK. DUNGEONZ, SOLITAIRE, two excellent
STOS games, although I can't get em to work on my STE! And loads
more (see table below)
ST FORMAT
The new look ST Format, is suprisingly enough exactly the same
size paper as ST User. The magazine is still in its orginal
style although some things have changed. The thing I like about
ST Format is the seriousness, which up until now, ST User lacked,
and I must admit, ST Format was always 'the better' of the two
magazines, but I found that the ST User coverdisk was better.
Now these magazines are going straight head - to - head.
The main feature of this issue of ST Format is 'Hard-Drives' and
they review and test 15 different models. This feature is quite
good, and anyone thinking of upgrading should take a look at
this.
There are about 13 game reviews, of which are very good indeed, a
lot of screenshots, and a new marking system, there is just the
overall mark and a few comments.
Screenplay extra reviews some budget releases and some games that
weren't featured.
Another main feature of this issue is the Art bit, a few artists
working on ST and dare we say the 'AM.' (NO!) alright then, on
another 16-Bit computer (mainly a laughable games machine!).
They are interviewed, and some give step by step advice on
creating your masterpiece, there are also tips on perspective,
and small reviews of PD and commercial art programs, and the
artists give you their favourite.
Furrther on in the mag you'll find some more art, by the readers,
this is also step by step, and shows how they created their
masterpieces.
Populous 2 was previewed and screenshots and comments from Peter
Molyneux were given, PM, being the main Bullfrog programmer, if
you didn't know.
Harlekin 2 is reviewed (suprisingly its reviewed in ST User as
well!), a more lengthy article in ST Format, but both equally
good.
The Public Sector I find is better in ST Format, as they have
more reviews, and screenshots, and they review a lot more demos,
art and grafix and sound programs, these a split into sections,
maybe ST Users will improve.
Sam Tramiel is interviewed and he reveals a lot of ST orientated
plans, this is quite a boring interview, but its one up on ST
User.
There are mainly long solutions in ST Format, for games, such as
Wonderland and Life and Death, whereas in ST User, there are
loads of little games hints, and free Hint cards (Original idea -
but I doubt if it 'll work).
A Business article about using Spreadsheets, Databases for
everyday things such as keeping records of Football Leagues, and
Mailmerging etc.
ST Format are putting little jargon boxes on most features which
tells the beginner what certain little things mean - quite
useful.
The last Bullfrog programming article, which does not have source
on disk, but explains little additions you can make to the game
on last month's disk.
A memory map is provided breaking up the memory positions of
certain things, such as System Variables and MFP Interuppt
vectors etc.
For GFA Basic programmers there is a section on file handling,
random access and sequential files are explained.
A lot of letters, more than ST User, and some are quite useful.

COVERDISK VIEW
--------------
Although ST User came with 2 disks and cost more, I still feel
that is has the better of the coverdisks, as ST Format's disk
wasn't really exciting this month was it??? ST Format haven't
featured TCB Tracker in full - have they?
OVERALL
-------
Big decisions, I don't really know which is the better magazines
overall, and I think its up to you. ST User has certainly the
better cover disk, which is what you mainly pay for. ST Format
has better PD reviews, features and articles in general, but ST
User with ST World may just knock this down to size, as ST World
featured great reviews.
I think we will have to wait and see, but for the time being here
are my results.
ST USER ST FORMAT
======= =========
Features 88% 92%
News 82% 88%
Games 95% 90%
Utilities 78% 82%
Public Domain 69% 85%
Coverdisk 96% 73%
Overall 85% 87%
So for the time being ST Format just knocks ST User off the top
spot, but I think this will change and it will be a hell of a
battle. So watch out for these mags and make your own choice.
